Heidelberg, Germany

With its glorious natural setting, the harmonious ensemble of castle, old town and river set in the midst of hills, Heidelberg is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Every year millions of tourists are drawn to experience Heidelberg's mystique. Heidelberg was included in the preliminary German list for registration as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city of the oldest university in Germany (established in 1386) looks back on over 800 years of history. Modern Heidelberg attracts people with its forward-looking science and research activities. The city  is a quickly growing business location and the lively centre of the Rhine-Neckar Triangle. Open-mindedness and internationality characterize the city on the Neckar that has cultivated town twinning relationships all over the world.

Heidelberg is also a city of science and business.   • Germany is the world's leading exporter: the volume of goods exported came to EUR 786 billion in 2005.
  • Key trading partners: France (10.3%), USA (8.8%), Great Britain (8.3%), Italy (7.1%).
  • Key sectors: Car-making; mechanical, electrical and precision engineering; chemicals; environmental technology; optics; medical technology; biotech and genetic engineering; nanotechnology; aerospace; logistics .
  • Trade fairs: About two thirds of all the world's keynote trade fairs take place in Germany (together about 140 international trade fairs.).
  • Largely because of the German education system German companies have an excellent reputation. Daimler, Siemens, Porsche, Lufthansa, SAP are just a few. They represent "Made in Germany", known as a seal of quality around the world. They represent innovation, quality and cutting-edge technology. Alongside internationally active corporations. Small and medium sized companies form the backbone of the German economy. Around 70% of all employees work in small and medium sized enterprises, the power-house of the German economy.
  • Foreign students in Higher education. 246,000 foreign students are enrolled at 372 institutes of higher education in Germany. After the United States and Great Britain, Germany is the third most attractive country for international students.
